How did he propose?
Ben, ever the romantic, had a brilliant plan to propose to Megan at the location of their first date - Rainey Park in Pullman He planned to recreate their first date, a picnic with Subway in the middle of winter, but it was none the less, utterly romantic. With Christmas in full swing and his being ready to move to western Washington, he wanted to make sure they were engaged when they were ready to begin this next chapter of their lives together.
As any good man would do, he intended to ask Megan's dad for
permission, but after opportunity after opportunity to ask Alan was
interrupted, Ben never got the chance. After all of the chaos of the
Christmas, they were able to get back to Megan's apartment
and celebrate the rest of the holiday together. Once they opened gifts
from one another, Ben and Megan began making plans to travel to Pullman
and gather the rest of Ben's things so he could make his final move to
Seattle.
Ben explained he forgot his last gift back in Pullman, so Megan
would have to wait. Unbeknownst to her she made an off handed remark,
that if that forgotten gift was something in a small box she would be
very upset. *Insert long pause and gasp here* She
had no idea what Ben was planning, because for all the time they'd been
dating, they said they wanted to avoid a cliche engagement with no
proposals on any major holidays, etc. She had no idea the gravity of
that comment would have, when Ben instantly went
silent and started to have an internal panic attack thinking she knew
exactly what was going on.
She still had no clue.
He decided to tell her that another small gift was outside in his
pickup and proceeded to call her best friend and tell her his plan was
blown. Megan was inside the apartment picking out a Christmas movie to
settle into and when he came back in 20 minutes
later (what in his pickup would take 20 minutes to fine?!) he settled
into Love Actually beside her. After some sort of adorable scene from
the movie, he began to tell her how much he loved her, and wanted them
to be together forever. Into a bag he slipped
his other gift, a bottle of blue liquid to which Megan thought was more
than a little strange. It wasn't until she turned around the bottle and
saw it was from a jeweler that she started putting the pieces together.
In that three seconds, he had bent down on
one knee, and in a flurry of words and Megan's tears he proposed. She
couldn't say "yes" enough and when he showed her the ring, it was upside
down. Panic ensued when she thought the ring would fall out of the
case, but he slipped it on her finger in time and
they celebrated with a bottle of champagne and the bouncing of a very
excited Labrador at their feet.
They were finally going to be a family."
How Did You Know He Was the One for You?
It
took all of a few months for me to "know" that Ben was for me. There
was no one
thing in particular, but just a series of events, moments and lightbulbs
that just made everything click. In many regards we are very opposite -
he is quiet, where I am, more often than not, overly talkative. His
sense of humor is dry and sarcastic, and I'm
a bit more theatrical and flail my hands all over the place when I'm
trying to make a point. Ben grew up in the country and enjoys taking
life at a slower pace, where I'm always on the go and have to be held
down to sit still.
But in those differences, we found a perfect balance. Never before
was just a simple hug able to calm me down and an episode of The Office
able to render me in hysterical laughter. I realized that life with
someone else could be easy, adventurous, fulfilling
and exciting all at once. He simply made everything in my life
better. And that is something I couldn't let go.
How did your food blog influence your wedding ideas?
The
blog has been an integral part of my daily life for over two years.
It's premise
is to cook comforting foods and be a constant reminder to live a slower
more country-esque life, enjoying every morself along the way. Ben and I
have always known that eastern Washington and the Palouse area was
where we are meant to be - but as reluctant Seattlites
for the foreseeable future I'm cooking my way back to the place we want
to build our lives together. It was important to incorporate
country-chic details into our day, with rough textured burlap runners on
the picnic tables to field flowers in the vases to
help refine the experience. And naturally - hearty, comforting food was
imperative for our guests - nothing light and chincy here!
How did you know GreenBluff/Trezzi Farm was your wedding location?
I
spent many weekends in college north of Spokane, a short drive away
from Trezzi
Farm. All those weekends were spent with an axe or chainsaw in my hand,
since I was a competitive lumberjack during my years at WSU. Those years
were very formative in my life, and since the Palouse and eastern
Washington was so important to both Ben and I,
it seemed like an easy decision to get married in a region we both had
such strong connections too. Stephanie and Davide were very welcoming,
and wanted to make sure that the space they created, with big barns and
red tin roofs felt like a joyful place to spend
our special day. Davide took great care in preparing delicious,
homecooked, authentic Italian food that wafted in and out of the barn
doors, and made made wine that was a true testament to his Italian
roots. And if those factors weren't enough, the giant metal
chickens placed around the property sealed the deal.
Why did you exchange notes before the first look and how did it make you both feel?
As if the anticipation and buildup of the day wasn't enough - I took it one step
further with asking Ben that we exchange cards on the day of before we saw eachother for the first time. No pressure!
Ben,
the quiet one of us, doesn't always vocalize his feelings, and even as
much
as I talk, expressing words of love and adoration for him can make me
tear up in five seconds flat. The cards gave us more of a neutral arena
to share our feelings and love for one another in a way that was
private, on our own terms and those cards are now
a keepsake for us to look back on. Those words are immortalized in those
cards, for us to look at forever as a fond reminder of that day and of
the commitment and love we have for one another.
His card turned out to be full of his typical dry witted humor,
sprinkled with quotes from The Office, a show we both love. But behind
all the laughs I knew that they held deep seeded love in only a way that
he could express. Mine on the other hand was
nothing but sap and girly flourish.
I am so glad we exchanged cards - it was a small moment of that day - but one that holds a very special place in my heart.
what was your fav element of the planning process and of the wedding day?
My
favorite part of the planning process was picking out wedding colors
and the bridesmaids
dresses. I went to the hardware stores and picked up gobbs and gobbs of
paint chips, scattering them all around the floor of our apartment,
picking and choosing and throwing out all sorts of combinations until I
reached our final decision - poppy, dark teal,
and tan. Trezzi Farms bright red barns needed wedding details to match -
so bright, bold colors with a dusty tan was where it was at.
The next challenge was finding bridesmaids dresses to match. We
lucked out at Nordstroms' where we found the perfect shade of teal
dresses that looked great on all the girls. I wanted to avoid the
typical one-time-wear bridesmaid dress, and opted for something
that would work great for a night on the town as well. This fit the
bill, and I even bought the tan version myself as my rehersal dinner
dress. Needless to say, all four of us girls have worn our dresses on
multiple occassisons, so my mission was accomplished.
Shopping
for my wedding dress was EASY. I found it right after we got engaged
through,
of all places, COSTCO! Yeah, I know. The do limited time tour in major
cities, with a small line of dresses from Kristie Kelly. I saw it
online, tried it on when the dress tour came to Seattle - and when it
came time for my mom and Beka to see me in it - they
cried. It was clearly the winner, hands down.
Of the wedding day - My faovrite element was the wild field
flowers. Our florist worked wonders that incorporated a wide range field
flowers in various oranges, reds and yellows and had stalks of wheat
thrown as a tribute to our love of the Palouse. She
understood every detail and took it to a whole new level. They were
perfection.
How did you come to your wedding theme?
Our wedding theme was easy to come by. We wanted it to be simple
and country-chic because of our love for Eastern Washington and the
wheatfields of the Palouse. The color scheme included lots of texture
and pops of color. Because the wedding was outdoors
with a country-type setting, we used burlap and lace for the table
runners, faux-tiqued mason jars for the vases and lots of candles to
provide nice lighting when the sun started setting. The colors of the
flowers looked great with the bright orange sunsets
eastern washington typically has. It fit us both and the area we loved.
